Replacement of our lost Giraffes from our neighbours

Thanks to Jan Prins who sent in some pictures of the recent giraffe capturing exercise. On the 14th of August 2008 a giraffe capturing operation started to replace our giraffes that broke through the fence and settled on the farm next door.

Our neighbours had agreed that we could capture 4 giraffes and chase them back onto Marulani at Noordhoek.

The whole operation took most of the day with a helicopter being in the air for about 5 hours.

The fence was dropped and the helicopter assisted in chasing a herd of 4 giraffes back onto Marulani. Three crossed back onto Marulani but the fourth one had to be darted and transported by road to Marulani.

Unfortunately 2 of the 4 broke through the fence and resettled themselves back onto the farm they came from. As soon as conditions are right, a further attempt will be made to relocate another 2 back onto Marulani. Estienne has in the meantime secured and upgraded the fence were they broke through.

Once the giraffe was darted, it's eyes were covered and ears plugged before the antidote could be administered.

Lastly the giraffe was loaded onto a special trailer and transported back to Marulani.
